Fieldtrip - Winterset, IA - John Wayne's Birth Place
Autumn means Field Trips
What wonderful family opportunities! Let's go on a Free Homeschool
Field Trip!!! Ah, September has arrived! Just like most families, it means
we’re looking more to the learning tools. Pulling out the pencils, papers, and
homeschool history books, homeschool science books, reading and math! You
know, that’s just not true! Just because we teach our children at home doesn’t
mean we have homeschool science books or homeschool history books for them,
homeschool supplies are similar to regular school and sometime homeschool
families take a different approach. Many times we may have items designed by
someone with homeschool students in mind. However, life is a learning tool!
Everyday these children are learning! They are learning to get along with each
other(boy! – is that a big one sometimes!) They are learning about what is
happening close to home. Just lately what child hasn’t been learning what has
been taking place in other states (if not their own)! They are even learning
about situations around the world, thanks to publications like World
and God’s World News , from a Godly perspective. We, however,
don’t limit their viewing of the national media, but do discuss how opinions
differ depending on your views. Learning is taking place every day no matter
what is going on, good experiences and bad. So let’s get to those good
experiences! Fall is also a great time to get out and take some drives. With
others back at school, the roads aren’t so crowded. It’s time to take those
free homeschool field trips. Most of these places aren’t busy either! Field
trips are homeschool history or homeschool science, at least the one I’m going
to tell you about this time. I’m sure if you homeschool you could tell me
about some places to visit, so please do so. Most of these are free homeschool
field trips, however, many do ask for donations to help support and keep them
running.
Nebraska Prairie Museum
Let’s get out the map. Look at the middle of Nebraska, and then let your eyes
move south. Do you see the town of Holdrege, Nebraska? You are very close to
what our children would say is one of the best museums. Ok, they haven’t seen
a lot of museums but they would be close to being right about this one.
Actually, this museum is just north of Holdrege, Nebraska. It is called the
Nebraska Prairie Museum. It is on Highway 138. We happened to come
across it on our trip across country this summer. It has so much! It shows
history and in such an interesting way, that even our 6 year old and our 9
year old did not want to leave! One section shows information on the German
POW Camp at Atlanta, Nebraska during WWII. That is among so many other things!
It shows how life has changed over the years. Children will find this museum
interesting and fun. Ours certainly did. Dads and moms will find this
interesting! You might even look at something that is supposed to be antique
and say, “Oh, I still use that”! We just enjoyed the Nebraska Prairie Museum
so much we could have spent the entire day there. Now, I will say to our
children, “oh, there’s a museum,” and after going to the
Nebraska Prairie Museum, they’re always answering with, “let’s go” or
“can we go”. Simply stated, the Nebraska Prairie Museum made quite an impact
upon our family, and I hope your family enjoys it as much!
