Welcome to The Reading Room at
Homeschool Living! We’re really happy to add this new addition to our
website! The children love to read and so we decided that sharing our reading
with all of you would be a great idea. Every month or so the children will be
giving you a report on some of the different books they are reading. Some
they’ll love reporting on, while others they’ll probably tell you that the
book wasn’t that good. Have fun reading the reports! If you like what you
read about a particular book, I’m sure you will be able to check it out at
your local library. If you have touble finding a particular book, we'll even
try to help!
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Scout and Jem are sister and brother.
Scout and Jem lived with their father, Atticus Finch. Their mother had
died after Scout was born. Dill came to town one summer, and the three
of them were friends at once. Dill was staying with his aunt, Aunt
Rachel. Miss Maddie was a real nice lady who lived across the street.
She had lots of flowers, and made the children a small cake once in awhile.
The Radley's house was nearby too. However, Scott and Jem never saw much
happening around there, except Mr. Radley going to work.
As long as Scout could remember, she always had
a curiosity about the Radley place. Dill was the one who put the ideas
of making Arthur (Boo) Radley come out, into Jem’s and Scott’s heads.
Atticus told them to stop bugging the Radleys. That did not stop
them, however. On one of their attempts to look into the Radley house,
Jem lost his pants on the fence, and when he went back to get them they were
hanging neatly over the fence with the tear, patched. However, before
getting his pants back, Atticus noticed his pants were gone. When asked
about the pants, Dill said he had won them in a game of poker. The
children also noticed that someone was leaving little gifts in a tree for them.
Sometime after the pants incident, the Finch
family went to Finch Landing for Christmas, to be with family. Scott got
in trouble and got spanked by her Uncle Jake, Atticus’ brother, over a lie
told by her cousin, Francis. Jem tried to cheer her up but it does not
work. However after awhile she tells him what happened at Finch Landing.
At this same time Atticus is asked to defend a black man who has been
accused of harming a white woman. All the town could see that the man,
Tom Robinson, was not guilty and that the woman’s own father, Bob Ewell, had
harmed his daughter. The jury decided Tom was guilty, deciding for a
white man over a black man. Although, Atticus told Tom not to give up
hope, Tom hangs himself. After the trial, Bob Ewell wanted to get
Atticus because the entire town knew that Bob Ewell had hurt his own daughter,
not Tom. The seasons passed and the children are in school again.
Scott was dressed as a big ham one night, after being in a play at school.
She couldn’t find her clothes and decided to wear the ham home. As
she and Jem walked through the woods, a shortcut home, they were attacked by
Bob Ewell. Someone showed up and stopped the attacker and got Jem and
Scott home. When Scott got a chance to see who it was, she finds out it
is Arthur Radley.
The name, To Kill a Mockingbird, comes
from the saying, not to kill a mockingbird, because they harm no one but make
beautiful song. The children learn this in two different incidents, one with
“Boo” Radley and the other with Tom Robinson.
The Hundred Dresses
By Eleanor Estes
This girl (Wanda)
said she had a hundred dresses and 50 shoes. She wanted to be friends with
the other girls so she said it. She didn’t have a hundred dresses or shoes,
but said that because she wanted the girls to like her. She moved away from
that town because the girls were picking on her and making fun of her. The
teacher read a letter that said she moved since the kids made fun of her. The
girls that made fun of her were sorry. They went to her home to see if she
was there. They saw a yellow cat. The girl was not there, she had left. The
school had a contest for best drawings. Boys had to draw airplanes, girls had
to draw dresses. Around the room were lots of dresses, all the girl’s. She
was picked the winner of the girls contest. She drew a lot better than the
other girls. All the other girls were sad they had been mean.
We have been reading books aloud to each other. We started this because of a
libray program, RAFT. The kids and I have been having a great time reading
aloud and by using our voices, making the stories come alive. The
Hundred Dresses was one of the books we read. Laura really liked
it. She loves to draw and started drawing many dresses as we read the book.
The book report above is hers.
The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy
I'm doing a book report on The Hunt for Red October.
The author's name is Tom Clancy. He has written many books. The main
character in The Hunt for Red October is a man named Jack Ryan. Tom
Clancy has written many book on this character. This book is about a Soviet
Navy captain named Marko Ramius who along with about a dozen other officers
wanted to defect to the
United States . He
also wants to give the United States the Red October a Nuclear submarine that
had a new silent engine. However, to defect he had to do it carefully so not
to arouse the concern of the rest of the crew, but also not be detected by
other Soviet subs. At that time the Americans and English believed him to be
attacking the
United States . CIA
analyst Jack Ryan, however, believed him to be defecting but he had no proof.
Back on the Red October, Ramius found that they had a saboteur on board but
didn't know who he was at the time. During that same time, a
U.S . submarine was
trailing the Red October. After Ryan and other officer are able to get aboard
the Red October and transport the majority of the crew off, the United States
faked an explosion underwater so to make rescued crew think the Red October
had exploded. Later Red October got into a battle with another Soviet sub,
resulting in the destruction of the soviet sub and severe damage to the
October. The Soviets were led to believe that the Red October had been
destroyed. Meanwhile, the Red October was heading to a
US harbor. I liked
this book because the movie was good so I knew the book had to be as good, if
not better. This book would be for teenagers and adults.
Bible Verses To Think About
Each day the children read
from their Bibles and write a favorite Bible verse. Kimberly thought that it
would be fun to share the verses with all of you.
Kim's verse is from the Old Testament.
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save
me, and I shall be saved; for thou art my praise. Jeremiah 17:14
Laura's verse is from the New Testament.
Hear the word of God, and do it. Luke 8:21
Shelby's verse is from the Old Testament.
In the beginning God created the heavens and
the earth. Genesis 1:1
Jesse's verse is from the Old Testament.
Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.
Ecclesiastes 5:5
